Zusammenfassung:To the Editor: Without studying a group given fluorouracil alone, how can the authors of the negative colon-cancer trial (March 22 issue) 1 conclude that there is no place for fluorouracil in gastrointestinal chemotherapy? When the protocol used by the Gastrointestinal Tumor Study Group was formulated in 1975, Moertel, 2 Ansfield et al., 3 and others had already shown that an initial priming titration followed by weekly treatment with fluorouracil yielded an increase in survival (five to six months). Comparative studies of four different fluorouracil dosage schedules were performed only by Ansfield and the Central Oncology Group. An initial titration with induction, reinforcement, . . .
