The infection is mostly subclinical in the neonatal period, and less than 10 per cent of those infected have disease compatible with cytomegalic inclusion disease.
We have studied the incidence of congenital cytomegalovirus infection in Japan, where 94 per cent of women become immune by the childbearing age.
