Zusammenfassung: | Twenty hospitalized adults on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) were studied for 15 days to assess the effects of daily vitamin C intake (350-2250 milligrams) on serum and urine vitamin C levels. Increases in serum vitamin C levels were observed but remained in the normal range; urine vitamin C levels were above normal in all but one of the patients. Intake of vitamin C resulted in a positive C balance which correlated with urine concentration. Eight hundred milligrams/day was the maximum vitamin C retained. Therefore, doses in excess of 1000 milligrams/day are not recommended. (kbc) |
