The current approach to the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis consists of clinical suspicion and the use of blood cultures, diagnostic imaging techniques (e.g., CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging), and tissue biopsy. These approaches, however, often lack sensitivity, may produce positive results only in more advanced stages of infection, and may be unduly invasive in immunocompromised patients.
Newer diagnostic approaches for invasive candidiasis include the detection of candida cell-wall antigens, such as mannans,

and candida metabolites, such as D-arabinitol.
