Zusammenfassung:	Urinary retention was the major presenting symptom of a patient found to have an acquired cytomegalovirus infection. The differential diagnosis of urinary retention is discussed. Evidence of infection with herpes viruses should be sought in those patients presenting with urinary retention who have a viral prodrome or in whom other common causes of urinary retention are not detected.
