Rupture of the uterus with DIC

Rupture of the gravid uterus is an uncommon but serious obstetric emergency that presents a lethal threat to both fetus and mother. Previous reports in the literature emphasize the importance of prompt recognition and aggressive surgical treatment of this entity, and mention is made of the possibility of DIC in uterine rupture. We report a case in which there was both clinical and laboratory evidence of DIC in a patient with rupture of the gravid uterus. The patient was successfully managed with prompt hysterectomy and replacement of coagulation factors. The fetus died.
