Reduced bone mineral density in men and women with allogeneic bone marrow transplantation

Bone marrow transplantation is now highly successful, and the number of individuals so treated is growing. Attention now needs to be directed to the effects of such treatment on long-term morbidity. Osteoporosis is one such problem for which bone marrow transplant recipients may be at increased risk. We studied bone density at the lumbar spine and femoral neck in a group of subjects following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation to establish whether in fact bone mineral density was reduced.
