Interplay of somatostatin and growth hormone-releasing hormone in genesis of episodic growth hormone secretion

The secretion of growth hormone (GH) is markedly pulsatile in nature in both man and experimental animals. Exensive evidence indicates that the episodic pattern of GH release from the pituitary gland is generated by an esquisite interplay between two hypothalamic neuropeptides, the stimulatory GH-re...

Zusammenfassung:The secretion of growth hormone (GH) is markedly pulsatile in nature in both man and experimental animals. Exensive evidence indicates that the episodic pattern of GH release from the pituitary gland is generated by an esquisite interplay between two hypothalamic neuropeptides, the stimulatory GH-releasing hormone (GRF) and the inhibitory hormone, somatostatin (SRIF). This report will focus on the physiological significance of the SRIF/GRF interaction in genesis of episodic GH secretion.
