Zusammenfassung:	Zidovudine, a reverse transcriptase inhibitor, is used in the treatment of HIV and AIDS. We evaluated a microbiological method of determining serum levels of zidovudine. Serum levels of zidovudine were assayed by a microbiological method which used Escherichia coli (Kp 1976-712) as the test strain in BAM 2 medium. The method was sensitive at a concentration of 25 ng/ml, which is similar to results obtained with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). This microbiological method has the advantage of being accessible to non-specialized laboratories and, in spite of its low cost, its accuracy is good.
