Polymorphism in promoter region of inducible nitric oxide synthase gene and protection against malaria

Kun et al determine the frequency of sickle-cell trait, and found a significant difference, in the same range as the distribution of the nitric oxide-synthase 2 (NOS2) promoter mutation. Data suggest that a new NOS2 promoter mutation is restricted to an area that is highly endemic for malaria.
