Zusammenfassung: | MEDICINE is changing rapidly and at an increasing rate. When today's students are in midcareer, medical practice will be far different. Medical educators must find ways to help young doctors prepare for the medicine of the future. This article explores some of the forces, inside and outside the profession, that are causing change, and considers some directions for change with respect to the concepts and organization of general medical education. I also describe efforts under way in the faculty of medicine at Harvard University to develop new pathways in general medical education.
