LEGIONELLA GORMANII PNEUMONIA IN A CHILD WITH CHRONIC GRANULOMATOUS DISEASE

Legionella spp. are intracellular bacteria that produce catalase as well as a toxin that inhibits oxidative killing in polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells. Because of these properties Legionella spp. are potential pathogens in chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). To date only one case of Legionella infection, pneumonia caused by Legionella pneumophila , has been reported in a patient with this disease. We present a child with CGD who had severe pneumonia caused by Legionella gormanii , a rare human pathogen.
