Retinopathy of Prematurity and Bilirubin

To the Editor: The suggestion by Heyman et al. (Jan. 26 issue) 1 that bilirubin may protect against the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) stimulated us to seek evidence of a similar association in our patient population. We reviewed the charts of all infants born at the University of Kentucky Medical Center between 1986 and 1988 in whom ROP developed. These included 11 infants with Grade III or IV ROP, 26 with Grade II ROP, and 56 with Grade I ROP. A sample of 39 preterm infants born during the same period formed a comparison group.
