Surveillance and use of computers in hospital infection control

Infections acquired in hospital are now recognized to be an important medical, economic and social problem. Much of the information has come from the routine and orderly collection of data utilizing explicit criteria for infection. The purpose of this report is to review the history of surveillance, summarize its modern development in hospitals and then define the elements of surveillance and potential benefits of computer enhancement.
