Zusammenfassung:	Mecillinam is effective prophylactically against travellers' diarrhoea and equal in efficacy to co-trimoxazole in gastroenteritis due to Vibrio spp. and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli infection and similar to ampicillin in curing acute shigellosis. However, there are no data on its value in the treatment of travellers' diarrhoea. Sixty-five Danish tourists on a two-week trip to India gave informed consent to participation in a study. The duration of watery stools was significantly shorter in the pivmecillinam group.
