+ secretion has been localized to the principal cells, while Cl
− absorption was found to proceed largely, though not exclusively, through the tight junctions between cells.

4. Intercalated cells of type A, which prevail in the outer medullary collecting duct, secrete H
+ and intercalated cells of type B, which are most frequent in the late cortical collecting duct, secrete HCO
3
−.

5. This specialization of different cells in transporting individual ions provides the basis for the efficient adaptive regulation of urinary ion excretion. |
