Zusammenfassung:The conditioning phenomenon of spontaneous recovery is reviewed in the context of flooding (exposure, response prevention). Two examples of complete spontaneous recovery of animal avoidance behaviour following previous treatment with flooding are described. Implications for the treatment of human phobias via flooding are discussed along with possible strategies to avert spontaneous recovery of avoidance behaviour.
