Mixed lymphocyte culture-evidence that pretransplant transfusion with platelets induces FcR and blocking antibody production similar to that induced by leukocyte transfusion

The authors performed comparative studies on healthy volunteers by exposing them to an intravenous infusion of leukocytes (buffy coat) or purified platelets prepared from one unit of blood. Seven healthy men, previously untransfused volunteers, were immunized with buffy coat, separated freshly from 400 ml donor blood. The interval between the two immunizations was 6 weeks.
