Zusammenfassung:The World Health Organization considered malaria eradicated from Portugal by 1974. However during the 1940s Portugal had witnessed a peak period for malaria, with 100,000 cases and 500 deaths annually. During the 10 years up to September 1986, 65 cases of malaria where diagnosed and treated in the authors' department. "Pernicious" (severe and complicated) malaria was reported in 7 patients, one of whom died. The authors discuss the incidence of malaria cases in Portugal from 1977 to 1986.
