Zusammenfassung:The role of group B beta haemolytic streptococcus (GBS) in neonatal infections in Pakistan was studied in two phases. The maternal carriage rate at tbe time of delivery was 24 per cent. The acquisition rate of GBS in infants from carrier mothers was 85 per cent. The ear swab was positive in 87 per cent while the nose and umbilical swabs were positive in 66 per cent of the contaminated infants, respectively. Of the 480 infants admitted to hospital with suspected infection 174 were culture positive for different types of organisms. Among these 18 per cent were infected with GBS. Septicaemia and maningitis were the common infections.
