Zusammenfassung: | Two kinds of frequencies of adolescent suicide attempts are recorded today: those reported by adolescents themselves and those reported by others. Results of 5 large-scale investigations of suicidal behavior (self-reported) in the Netherlands are reported. Data show that the studies vary in sample size with regard to their methods and characteristics and that there are different self- reported frequencies of adolescent suicide attempts. The frequencies of suicide attempts reported by others vary with the source of the data. Hence, it is not clear whether there is any uniformity in the operationalization of suicide attempts. It is concluded that more experimental or qualitative research is necessary and a manual that defines a common concept of attempted suicide is needed.
