Gastrointestinal absorption of calcium from milk and calcium salts

A diet study using gastric lavage to recover unabsorbed nutrients assessed the daily absorption of calcium (Ca) from milk vs. from 5 Ca salts in 8 healthy, fasting young men (ages, 25-30). Zusammenfassung:A diet study using gastric lavage to recover unabsorbed nutrients assessed the daily absorption of calcium (Ca) from milk vs. from 5 Ca salts in 8 healthy, fasting young men (ages, 25-30). The results were correlated with in vitro studies on the solubility of the various Ca salts under highly acidic (pH 2.5) and slightly acidic (pH 5) conditions, corresponding to the acidity of the stomach and the upper small intestine, respectively. It was concluded that Ca uptake from the 5 Ca salts (carbonate, acetate, lactate, gluconate, citrate) and from whole milk was similar.(mjs)
