Predictive value of early pregnancy glycohemoglobin in the insulin-treated diabetic patient

Low maternal serum α-fetoprotein has been associated with fetal chromosomal aneuploidy. Amniotic fluid α-fetoprotein concentration has been reported to be low in some studies and normal in others. Amniotic fluid α-fetoprotein concentrations were compared in 6396 normal pregnancies and 57 pregnancies complicated by aneuploidy. The α-fetoprotein concentrations in patients with all forms of trisomy and trisomy 21 in particular were significantly lower than those of normal control subjects (p < 0.002).
