Zusammenfassung: | This article presents results of a pilot project carried out in October 1984 among Cree and Inuit children of Kuujjuaraapik (Poste-de-la-Baleine, Great-Whale River in Northern Quebec). Otolaryngological examinations and audiological tests were performed on the children to determine the prevalence of otitis and hearing loss; questionnaires were also administered to parents and teachers to document a possible relationship between hearing loss and school problems. It was found that 23% of Inuit children hada bilateral or unilateral hearing loss, much in excess of the 4% found in the Cree children. There was evidence of current or past bilateral ear pathology in 78% of Inuit children and 12øï in Cree children. |
