Zusammenfassung:	Trauma to the lower extremity has been treated in the past by many specialties and subspecialties of medicine. No specialty, however, should be better qualified or trained in treating lower extremity trauma than the podiatrist. This study reviews some critical principles of acute trauma management and treatment. A simple algorithm is suggested. Three representative case studies are presented, demonstrating the importance and value of an established protocol.
