Medical student career choice: Will the market provide the solution to our health care workforce needs?

An editorial notes that a task force from the Association of American Medical Colleges has recommended a series of strategies to ensure that within the shortest possible time a majority of graduating students be committed to careers in one of the generalist disciplines. Medical schools and graduate medical education programs must change so that qualified physicians required by the emerging health care system can be trained.
