Establishing Mutual-Help Groups for Family-Member Care Givers: A New Role for Community Health Nurses

Today, an ever increasing percentage of the population is becoming elderly. As a result, the number of families becoming involved in caring for an elderly relative is also increasing. These family care givers are at risk for developing emotional and physical problems brought about by stresses and strains inherent in this role. Community health nurses are in a unique position to support these persons by creating mutual‐help groups. Such groups help to supply care givers with a forum for continuing problem solving and inform them of resources available within the community.
