HTLV-III Infection and Epitope Recognition by OKT4 Monoclonal Antibody

To the Editor: Recently, cellular membrane receptors of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) retrovirus — human T-cell lymphotropic virus Type III/lymphadenopathy-associated virus (HTLV-III/LAV) 1 , 2 — have been found to be CD4 antigens (T4 antigens) on human T cells, since only OKT4-posit...

Zusammenfassung:To the Editor: Recently, cellular membrane receptors of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) retrovirus — human T-cell lymphotropic virus Type III/lymphadenopathy-associated virus (HTLV-III/LAV) 1 , 2 — have been found to be CD4 antigens (T4 antigens) on human T cells, since only OKT4-positive cells are susceptible to HTLV-III and several monoclonal antibodies against CD4 antigens inhibit infectivity of HTLV-III and LAV. 3 4 5 We examined cell-surface markers of peripheral-blood lymphocytes from 184 patients with hemophilia who had received multiple infusions of Factor VIII or IX concentrates imported mainly from the United States, using laser flow cytometry (Spectrum III [Ortho, Raritan, N.J.]).
