Initially conceived as a series of lectures written by Joas for his visiting professorship at the University of Chicago in 1985 and later developed with the aid of Knobl, this book covers the European and American developments of social theory, ranging from the normative functionalism of Talcott Parsons to the anti-structuralism of Alain Touraine and Paul Ricoeur (and a significant amount in-between).
