Effects of advancing pregnancy on left ventricular function during bicycle exercise

Pregnancy is associated with increased heart rate, stroke volume and blood volume, and reduced systemic vascular resistance. 1 These major cardiovascular changes are accompanied by an increase in left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic dimension without a corresponding increase in LV wall thickness. 2 R...

Zusammenfassung:Pregnancy is associated with increased heart rate, stroke volume and blood volume, and reduced systemic vascular resistance. 1 These major cardiovascular changes are accompanied by an increase in left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic dimension without a corresponding increase in LV wall thickness. 2 Rigorous bicycle exercise does not compromise LV function during the second half of pregnancy. 3 Stroke volume can increase by an increase in either contractile or preload reserve, or both. This study examines the mechanisms by which stroke volume was maintained during strenuous exercise early and late in gestation.
