Notes on the Demography of London at the End of the Seventeenth Century

Studies on the demography of London in the last decade of the 17th cent are presented, based on a study of material provided by the 1694 Act (taxation of marriages, births, deaths & bachelors) & the 1692 Poll Tax Act, & of material gathered by P. E. Jones & A. V. Judges, & presented in their 'London Population in the Late Seventeenth Century' (in Economic History Review, 1935, Oct). Data are offered, in form of statistical tables on: (1) pop-a sample of 40 parishes of the city of London within the walls (absolute numbers), 1695; (2) demographic structure of that sample; (3) some soc characteristics of that sample & of 7 parishes with highest % of pop liable to surtax; (4) % distribution of the sample in (3) by marital condition; & (5) components used in estimating 'true' numbers of baptisms & burials in the city of London, 1696-1698. It is noted that this London study is part of a larger res project which may, in the future, be extended beyond London. I. Langnas.
