Zusammenfassung:Autoclaved or non-autoclaved used broiler litter that was experimentally contaminated with Campylobacter jejuni was capable of infecting specific-pathogen-free chicks maintained in modified Horsfall isolators. Artificially infected chicks became fecal shedders of C. jejuni, resulting in contamination of both autoclaved and non-autoclaved used broiler litter. Fecal shedding of C. jejuni by litter-reared, artificially infected chicks persisted for at least 63 days after chicks were transferred to an isolation unit with a wire floor, which prevented coprophagy. C. jejuni was consistently recovered from water and litter in units housing directly and indirectly infected birds, indicating environmental contamination. These experiments demonstrate the potential role of litter in the perpetuation and transmission of C. jejuni infection in commercial chickens. /// Cama de pollos de engorde sometida o no al autoclave fué contaminada artificialmente con Campylobacter jejuni demostrándose su capacidad para infectar pollos libres de gérmenes patógenos mantenidos en unidades de aislamiento tipo Horsfall. Los pollos infectados artificialmente eliminaron el C. jejuni en la materia fecal, contaminando así tanto la cama sometida al autoclave como la no tratada. La eliminación del C. jejuni por pollos infectados experimentalmente y criados en cama fué de por lo menos 63 días, época ésta cuando los pollos se pasaron a una unidad de aislamiento con piso de alambre, eliminando así la coprofagia. C. jejuni fué aislado consistentemente del agua y la cama de las unidades de aislamiento, indicando una extensa contaminación ambiental. Estos experimentos demuestran el papel de la cama en la transmisión y establecimiento perpetuo de la infección por C. yeyuni en pollos comerciales.
