A Second Glucagon in the Pancreatic Islets of the Daddy Sculpin Cottus scorpius

The peptide hormone glucagon has been isolated from the islet tissue (Brockmann bodies) of the teleost Cottus scorpius (daddy sculpin) and sequenced. The sequence is HSEGTSNDYSKYLEDRKAQDFVQWLMNN differing at four positions from the glucagon found earlier in the same species by Conlon and coworkers (...

Zusammenfassung:The peptide hormone glucagon has been isolated from the islet tissue (Brockmann bodies) of the teleost Cottus scorpius (daddy sculpin) and sequenced. The sequence is HSEGTSNDYSKYLEDRKAQDFVQWLMNN differing at four positions from the glucagon found earlier in the same species by Conlon and coworkers (1987b, Eur. J. Biochem, 164, 117-122). Thus sculpin, in common with anglerfish, possesses two distinct glucagons. Comparative sequence data are presented as a phylogenetic tree.
