Zusammenfassung:	The principles of autologous transfusion are discussed. Autologous blood can be transfused for about the same cost as conventional donor blood, but there is decreased risk of the transmission of infectious disease or the formation of antibodies directed against red-cell antigens. Intraoperative blood replacement requirements for almost all orthognathic surgical procedures may be met by autologous liquid storage according to the schedule provided.
