Effects of Chemotherapeutic Agents on the Immune Response. II

The antimetabolites consist of such agents as the purine and pyrimidine analogs and the antifolates, which inhibit the synthesis of RNA, DNA, and protein. Zusammenfassung:The antimetabolites consist of such agents as the purine and pyrimidine analogs and the antifolates, which inhibit the synthesis of RNA, DNA, and protein. Two highly immunosuppressive antimetabolites that deserve special attention are the thiopurines: 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and azathioprime (Imuran, AZA). The former has been used mostly for the chemotherapy of acute leukemias while the latter is used extensively in organ transplantation. The immunosuppressive properties of this group of agents has been extensively reviewed.
