Regulation of plasma LDL-cholesterol levels by dietary cholesterol and fatty acids

This chapter reviews information on organs in various species that are involved in the synthesis and degradation of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The quantitative relationships between these processes are also described and the manner in which dietary cholesterol and triglycerides alter these processes is reviewed. A model is presented that suggests how fatty acids and cholesterol interact biochemically to bring about the marked changes in the steady-state concentration of LDL-C observed in both experimental animals and humans
