Zusammenfassung:A 2-stage study was designed to identify and formulate interviewing and counseling skills needed by dietetic technicians, and to compare these skills to actual performance of entry-level dietetic technicians. The competencies identified included establishing rapport, communicating effectively, utilizing timing controls, focusing on the client, and gathering and presenting data and nutrition information. Videotaped performances of dietetic technician students were then compared to the defined criteria. The interviewing and patient education skills were generally satisfactory, although some deficiencies were demonstrated in ability to focus on the client. In-depth training in client-centered skills should be given to dietetic technician students. (cj)
