Zusammenfassung:White Pekin ducks infected with P. lophurae and treated with phenylhydrazine hydrochloride have a lower parasitaemia than untreated ducks. The mechanism by which this effect occurs is discussed. The nuclei of parasitized erythrocytes swell and degenerate following the liberation of the parasites. These degenerating nuclei are phagocytized. However, some may remain in the circulation and form “smudges” in blood smears.
