Zusammenfassung:High-intensity neutron beams provide a quantitative measurement of the orientation of the c-axis of the apatite crystals in bones and the preferred direction can be identified with the direction of pull of attached muscles. An examination at seven sites on the mandible has been correlated with the muscles which open and close the jaw and suggests that the stresses in the body of the mandible are similar to those in a hollow tubular beam.
