Zusammenfassung:A formalism for the optimal estimation of the probabilities of hypothyroidism, euthyroidism, and hyperthyroidism is outlined. The scheme provides a means for assigning uncertainties to the estimates. These uncertainties can be used to determine whether or not the difference between two probabilities is statistically significant. Clinical data are utilized to illustrate the method.
