The relationship of chemical structure to germicidal activity as evidenced by chlorinated phenols

The phenol coefficients of 16 of the 19 possible chlorophenols have been determined under controlled conditions of pH. Chlorophenols increase in germicidal activity through the mono-, di-, and trichloro- series but decrease in the tetra- and penta- series when the phenol coefficient is used as a cri...

Zusammenfassung:The phenol coefficients of 16 of the 19 possible chlorophenols have been determined under controlled conditions of pH. Chlorophenols increase in germicidal activity through the mono-, di-, and trichloro- series but decrease in the tetra- and penta- series when the phenol coefficient is used as a criterion of germicidal activity. This irregularity in behavior is discussed and an explanation is offered.
