Zusammenfassung:To the Editor: In the August 16 issue, Hess and his co-workers described pseudohypoxemia in patients with leukocytosis or thrombocytosis, or both. However, the initial five-minute readings of partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood (PaO 2 ) in their test samples kept at room temperature (mean, 56 mm Hg) and at 2°C (mean, 57 mm Hg) were clearly abnormal. Further decline in PaO 2 measured after five minutes was prevented only if the blood samples were promptly immersed in ice. We have reported on the phenomenon of "Fictitious Hypoxemia Associated with Extreme Leukocytosis" with particular attention to this initial . . .
