Primary chondrosarcoma of the diaphragm

The first example of primary extraosseous chondrosarcoma located in the diaphragm is reported. The patient presented with abdominal pain secondary to hemorrhage from the tumor into the peritoneal cavity. Wide excision of the tumor was performed. Five months later the tumor recurred and a second operation was carried out. The patient died with obvious recurrence two months later. The genesis of this rare tumor is unknown. The possibility of the tumor arising from cartilaginous metaplasia from the multipotential fibroblast is raised.
