Zusammenfassung:This review discusses the medical management of pediatric refractory status epilepticus, defined here as persistent seizures of any type after the administration of 2 appropriate anticonvulsants. The use of both nonanesthetic and anesthetic anticonvulsants is discussed along with the relative strengths and weaknesses of each agent. Appropriate treatment goals and the use of electroencephalographic monitoring are described as are reasonable treatment algorithms. Finally, ethical considerations are briefly discussed in the context of available outcome data.
