IN a recent communication under this title, Finniston, Jones and Madsen 1 utilize the two basic equations and due respectively to Mayer 2 and O'Neill 3 . These equations have also been quoted in other recent papers, for example, by Tabor 4 . It therefore seems desirable to make available some results which show that (2), although it may be applicable in some circumstances, is not generally true.
