Sex and aggression: competitive mating strategy in the male rat

Pairs of male rats fight vigorously for access to a receptive female. By inhibiting their rival's copulatory behavior, dominant males protect their ejaculate during the critical period required for sperm transfer, thus ensuring their reproductive success.
