Minamata victims receive compensation
Minamata disease, named after the Japanese village of its origin, is caused by organic mercury compounds entering the food chain. Mercury was dumped into Minamata Bay by the Japanese company Chisso Corp. from the 1930s up until 1968, resulting in the contamination of local seafood.
