Wear of TiB sub(2) Coatings

The wear properties of elctrodeposited coatings of TiB sub(2) in low speed (5 cm s super(-1)) and high speed (30 m s super(-1)) sliding applications in contact with hardened steel are reported. An improved method for the preparation of these coatings is described. The effects of sliding speed, lubrication and substrate material of the coating were investigated. The microhardness of some of the coatings was measured. The results indicate that the TiB sub(2) coating compares favorably with single-crystal Al sub(2)O sub(3) in unlubricated high speed applications.
