Statistical properties of the wind field at Taichung harbour, Taiwan

An incomplete data set of 26 yr, ranging from January 1971 to March 1996, was used to study wind climate at Taichung harbour, Taiwan. The hourly 10-min mean wind speeds were measured on the northern breakwater of the harbour. Short-term statistics were studied by fitting maximum daily wind speeds to theoretical extreme value distributions found in the literature. Predictions of the 25-yr extreme wind speed from models were compared with the maximum value of the data, and extrapolations to 50- and 100-yr extreme wind speeds were then attempted.
