Influence of Culture Conditions on Growth and Rheological Properties of Carrageenans in Cystoclonium purpureum (Huds.) Batters

Under controlled environmental conditions, vegetative fragments of Cystoclonium purpureum show a maximum daily growth rate of 7.5% d super(-1) in seawater enriched with 548 mu M N-NO sub(3) super(-) and 12 mu M PO sub(4) super(=) at 80 mu E m super(-2) s super(-1) and 12 degree C. An iota-carrageena...

Zusammenfassung:Under controlled environmental conditions, vegetative fragments of Cystoclonium purpureum show a maximum daily growth rate of 7.5% d super(-1) in seawater enriched with 548 mu M N-NO sub(3) super(-) and 12 mu M PO sub(4) super(=) at 80 mu E m super(-2) s super(-1) and 12 degree C. An iota-carrageenan yield of 50% dry matter was obtained. However, the modulus of elasticity was lower (about 50 Pa at 30 degree C) than that of carrageenan extracted from wild samples (about 200 Pa at 30 degree C) of this species collected on the Calvados coast.
